I understand 'plas mawr' to mean big hall or big mansion, in other words a big house. I only twigged onto this when I heard that 'ty mawr' was the Welsh for big house which is very close to the Irish for big house 'tigh mór'. Depending on the dialect of Irish spoken you might pronounce 'tigh' the same as 'ty' and 'mawr' is not far from the pronunciation of 'mór'. ptkcollins
