An uncirculated coin shows no wear at all. Most have full mint luster but also may have minor nicks and scratches. Some uncirculated coins do not have any mint luster but still do not show any signs of wear.

How do you know if your 1971 one dollar coin is uncirculated?

A uncirculated coin shows no wear. You can compare it to a known example or look at pictures of uncirculated coins, but the best thing to do is have a collector or dealer look at it.

What does an uncirculated 1908 US quarter look like?

In the related links I have added links to the front and back of an uncirculated Barber quarter, yours should look the same if it is uncirculated (or possibly almost uncirculated) only with a different date. Keep in mind that if you want to sell your coin as uncirculated, you need to have it graded by a professional grading company before you will find buyers willing to pay a significant premium on it. Also, to the untrained eye, uncirculated and almost uncirculated coins look nearly identical, but a reputable coin dealer or grading company can tell the difference. And there is a huge price jump from an almost uncirculated coin to a mint state coin.

How do you know if an Indian head nickel is uncirculated?

On buffalo nickels, the easiest way to check if the coin is uncirculated when compared to a coin that is almost uncirculated or extra fine is to look at the horn on the buffalo on the reverse. On an uncirculated coin, it should have no wear at all, as the grades get lower the wear becomes evident.

How do you tell if your American silver eagle is a pf70 or not?

You can't unless you pay the $20+ to send your coin to NGC/PCGs even under magnification the ordinary person cannot tell the difference between a pf69 and pf70 coin. Of course, it is easy to tell if your coin is uncirculated or proof, a proof silver eagle will have very shiny, mirror like fields that are easy to see yourself in. An uncirculated silver eagle will be shiny, but won't be mirror like. Also, the raised part of the coin will look frosted on a proof coin but not on an uncirculated coin.

What is au condition applied to old coins?

AU means that the coin is about uncirculated. To the untrained eye, the coin appears to be uncirculated but if you look closely you will see wear on the highest parts of the coin. Many times, a high grade AU coin will look better than a lower grade MS (mint state) coin, even though the AU coin has wear while the MS coin does not.

How do you determine which grade my 1993 American silver eagle coin is?

By looking for wear. In practice, it doesn't matter what grade your silver eagle is, it will simply sell for bullion. The only thing to look is if your coin is proof or bullion. A proof coin will have mirror-like fields where you can see yourself like a mirror. An uncirculated coin may look shiny but it won't be nearly as shiny as a proof.

Can a coin be both AU and BU?

Not really. While I suppose it is possible for one side of a coin to be uncirculated while the other side is only almost uncirculated, a coin couldn't be both brilliant uncirculated while being almost uncirculated.
