In summary, Solomon, is getting old around the time of this writing. He is speaking to the young people encouraging them to learn from the lessons he learned from over the years of his life. 'Walk in the ways of your heart' in verse 9 is not telling us to be sinful in sensual pleasures, instead young people should try to enjoy themselves fully but always remembering that God will one day review the quality of their lives (see chapter 12:14). Youth doesn't last forever and passes away like a vapor. Humans discover that "we get old too soon and smart too late."

In chapter 11:1-8, he speaks to the value of diligence in life while being as generous as possible "Give a serving to seven, and also to eight." It doesn't matter which side the tree falls on as someone will have wood to use so don't wish it only for you. If someone is overly cautious in waiting for the ideal time before acting, they are doomed to failure.
