"walled up for life" can mean...

  • put in prison 'for life' e.g. as a punishment/penalty for commiting a serious crime.
  • confined to a walled cell for life, a situation of choice for a religious anchorite in medieval times. The incumbent's position was permanently secured by the doorway being bricked up after the anchorite had entered the cell, where he or she could then devote the remainder of their life to prayer and contemplation without intervention or temptation from the outside world.
