It occurs when an object is put into the liquid, causing the object to push water out of the way to take its place. Usually the water will overflow over the cup. If not, then the water will seem like it rised higher. An example of this is when you put ice into a cup of water making the ice float and seeming like there is more water then there really is.

How much force is needed to displace 1500 pounds of water?

The force needed to displace 1500 pounds of water depends on whether you are trying to displace it vertically or horizontally. To displace 1500 pounds of water vertically (lifting it), you would need a force of 1500 pounds. If you are displacing it horizontally (pushing it), the force needed would depend on the resistance of the water and the method being used.

Does displace mean replace?

No. They are different. Replace - You "replace" the batteries in a flashlight. The fit in the same place and do the same thing (function). If you were to "replace" a broken toaster it may not be the same shape or size but it would still have the same function. Displace - If you filled a glass full to the top with water and then decided to add ice, water would spill over the top of the glass. The ice "displaced" an equal amount of water. (Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.)

Why do you seem to weigh more in in than water?

The density of the human body is greater than that of water. This means that when you step into water, the water you displace has a weight equal to your weight. If you weigh more than the weight of the water that you displace, you will sink.

Do objects of the same volume displace the same amount of water?

Yes, objects of the same volume will displace the same amount of water regardless of their shape or material. This is because the volume of water displaced is determined by the volume of the object that is submerged in the water. This principle is known as Archimedes' principle.
