In Luke 14:26 Jesus told those who followed Him that in order to be true disciples, they must love Him supremely.
Luke 14 v.26 [KJ] If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
He did not suggest that people should have bitter hatred in their hearts toward father, mother, wife, children, brothers and sisters. That is forbidden by the 5th Commandment:-
Exodus 20
12 [KJ] Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The word "hate" is used figuratively to stress that God is to be loved more than family or self. He was emphasizing that love for Christ must be greater than all other loves. Even family ties must ever be allowed to deflect a disciple from a pathway of full obedience to the Lord.
Other versions make this clearer:
Luke 14: 26 [GW] "If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples.
Luk 14:26 [CEV] You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot come with me unless you love me more than you love your own life.
Luk 14:26 [GN]"Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well.
Compare Luke 14:26 in the King James with a similar verse in Matthew
Mat 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

No. In fact, He said just the opposite. From the New King James translation: Matthew 10:35-37 - For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law'; and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.' He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. Matthew 19:29 - And everyone who has left [forsaken] houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. Luke 14:26 - If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.Luke 14:33 - So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
James the disciple was the brother of John. They were from Galilee. James, the author of the book of James, was not the disciple. He was the half-brother of Jesus. I say half-brother because they had the same mother, Mary. Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus, but God was His real Father. Joseph was the father of James.
