It beats involuntarily to pumps your blood throughout your whole body. Your blood carrys oxygen and your bodies cells need oxygen to function and survive. If you notice that your finger and toes are usually the coldest part in your body this is because they are the farthest away from your heart. It takes much more time and work for your heart to pump blood to these areas.

The heart is the most vital organ in your body because it has many jobs to do. Each time you breath in the heart must pump that oxygen to all parts of the body so they can function properly and give them energy. It also has to pump hormones such as adrenaline to all parts of the body. Also, after red blood cells use there oxygen supply in which were delivered through arteries get taken back to the heart through veins. There the heart pumps the oxygen poor blood in the right ventricle through the pulmonary artery, into the lungs were oxygen poor blood receives oxygen. After, it travels through the pulmonary vein back to the heart in the left ventricle, then gets pumped into the aorta and the process repeats
