These dogs are both cold weather dogs. If you live in one of the warmer areas of OK, you may want to consider another breed entirely.
They are both good dogs for the country. The Alaskan Malamute is generally an outdoor working dog. He needs exercise and a strong sense of purpose. The Berner can also be a working dog, but he is happy whenever he is with you. He likes a lot of rambling walks in the woods, up and down the mountains, by the streams. Although Berners are generally not terribly fond of water, they will wade in on a hot day and take a drink.
