This is because beagles are relatively small, friendly, easy to handle, have a short, easy-to-clean coat, and can be successfully kept in kennels, even outdoors. Labratories also used mixed breed dogs of all kinds, often small to mid-sized animals; some experiments require larger dogs, such as German shepherds and Labrador Retrievers, or mixed-breed big dogs.
