There technically actually isn't any such thing as a "pit bull" per se; the term "pit bull" refers to a group of breeds or mixed-breed dogs; dogs identified as "pit bulls" are almost always actually mixed-breed dogs.

The breeds that people most often consider "pit bull breeds" are American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, and Staffordshire bull terriers. In addition to these breeds, other breeds are sometimes broadly considered "pit bulls," mainly because these animals have have similar physical characteristics (though most are not necessarily aggressive): Perro de Presa Canario, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, Alano Espanol, Japanese Tosa, Dogue de Bordeaux, Cordoba Fighting Dog, Bull Terrier, Antebellum Bulldog, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, American Bulldog, Boxer, Valley Bulldog, Olde English Bulldogge, Renascence Bulldogge, and Banter Bulldogge.
