The spotted cow to which you refer is a breed known as "Holstien." They originated in Holland and were later pedigreed in the late 1800's in the US. This is the black-and-white spotted breed that is popular on TV.

Cattle are separated into three different groups: Meat producing, dairy producing and labor. The Holstein is primarily a dairy producing cow and thrive in a cooler climate.

The reason that the Holstein is portrayed more often in media is that most meat producing cows didn't last long on a farm. They were bred, raised, sold and slaughtered in a relatively short time with no chance for their human owners to become emotionally attached.

The Holstein cow was kept as more of a family pet who produced milk every day. The milk cow was oftene named and loved. In order to produce better milk, the Holstein was treated and fed better than other breeds to maximize its usefulness on the family farms of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Instead of being seen as just another cow in a large herd of steak with legs, "'Ol Bessie" the Holstein usually had love and affection that translated to the big screen and TV shows that you see today. Bluebell the cow from Blue Bell Ice Cream products and the "Eat Mor Chikin" cows from Chik-Fil-A are prime examples of famous Holsteins.
