The Mexican drug trafficking started in the 1980s, in the city of Guadalajara on western Mexico. The first known cartel was therefore, the Guadalajara Cartel, founded by Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo. After several years of operations, Gallardo convened with other regional drug lords to split Mexico into territories or plazas, thus the Juarez Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel (led by El Chapo) and the Tijuana Cartel were born.

The Zetas are the most dangerous of them all. Most of them are deserters from the Mexican and Guatemalan armies, and are known for their brutal methods of intimidation against rival gangs, such as decapitations, acid baths and flaying (being skinned alive).
It is a crop first domesticated by the Mesoamerican civilizations that first appeared there, some 3000 years ago. As corn is an edible cereal on par to rice and wheat, it is one of the most important crops.

The Mexico's Drug War (2006-Present) qualifies as the reason. Since it was proclaimed by former Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa on December 11, 2006, more than 90,000 people (2014) have been killed by confrontations between federal, state and local police forces against drug cartel members.
