The Cyrillic alphabet was adapted by the Russian civilization in the 9th century from the Byzantine Empire. It was introduced by the missionary brothers Cyril and Methodius, who were invited by the ruler of the Eastern Slavic tribes to spread Christianity and develop a written script for the Slavic languages. The Cyrillic alphabet was modified over time to suit the specific linguistic needs of the Russian language.
Strictly speaking, Scandinavia only refers to Norway and Sweden because Denmark, Finland and Iceland are not on the Peninsula. However, Iceland and Denmark are considered Scandinavian because they are culturally, linguistically and ethnically Scandinavian. Finland has more Russian history than Scandinavian, but is also considered Scandinavian due to the fact that they are in a region called Fennoscandia (Fenno-Scandinavia), which is Norway, Sweden and Finland. As a result, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland (Faroe Islands too, since Denmark governs them) are all a part of Scandinavia.
People from Scandinavia who settled the land along the rivers in what is now north western Russia, were known as the Rus. After some linguistic development, the land eventually became known as "Rossiya" (in Russian). "Russia" is an English language corruption of "Rossiya". The German word for Russia is Rusland, a name that dates back possibly 1,000 years.
