The element of education is not very important to become heavy equipment mechanic. Rational thinking and practice of the work have more weight than the education.
You don't need a college degree, or even necessarily a highschool degree or GED to get a good mechanic job. What you do need is education and specific mechanic training. You can sometimes get this at community colleges, or better yet directly from a mechanic.
You need to have atleast 2 years of Secondary school. Who ever put "Don't worry about it buddy!" is a failure, Probably doesn't know how much education you need to be an auto mechanic.
2 years of secondary school

none what so ever
The education background of a diesel mechanic is a lot of schooling. One will have to learn air brakes, cooling systems, diesel motors, and power trains to become a diesel mechanic.
All you need to know is that you will have to work hard to get the most out of your education. Visit http://www.directoryofschools.com/motorcycle-mechanic-school.htm for more info.
