Because Grant ended the system of prisoner exchange, knowing that it would hurt the South more than the North. This speeded the end of the war.
The war was costly financially and physically.

There was no effect because the south only fought on their land. The total war ( all-out war that effected the civilians at home as well as soldiers in combat) destroyed the South population. Nor did it help ~Bms's anonymous

Reconstruction hurt the north because the south had a large supply of cheap labor. They also had better climate allowing crops to grow for a longer period.
The Civil War was fought in part due to the Emancipation Proclamation. It was also fought because of what most wars are fought for money or goods. The South had something the North wanted which was cotton but also the North had Factories that the South wanted.
