Total =270
270 electoral votes are needed to win the U.S. presidency. Each state has electoral votes equal to the total of the 2 representative the state has in the U.S. Senate plus the number of representative the state has in the House of Representatives. Since every state has two senators and at least one representative to the House, every state has at least 3 electoral votes. The District of Columbia gets 3 electoral votes. Therefore, the total number of electoral votes is 538 - 100 (senators) + 435 (representatives) + 3 (for DC). A majority is 270 - one more than half of the total number of 538.
The District of Columbia and 48 U.S. states (all except Maine and Nebraska) utilize a winner-takes-all rule for the Electoral College. In a winner-take-all state, all of the state's Electoral votes go to whichever candidate receives a majority of the popular vote, or a plurality of the popular vote (less than 50 percent but more than any other candidate).
270 is one more than half of the total number 0f 538. It is therefore a majority.
There are many ways to make up such a total. One way would be to win the 11 most populous states. (see the related question.)
270 is the total number of votes required to elect a president. No specific states are needed to make up this total and many combinations are possible.
The candidate needs to win 270 to win in a state.270 electoral votes are required for election. There are 538 total electoral vote; a majority of the 538 electoral votes is 270.(If nobody gets that many, the House of Representatives chooses from among the top three vote-getters in a special procedure in which each state gets one vote.)
A majority is one more than one-half of the votes. There are 538 electoral votes so 270 is the required majority.
The United States the House of Representatives has a total of 435 members which is based on the population of each state, the more people that live in a state the more members in the House of Representatives that state will have. In the Senate there are 100 Senators, 2 from each state. When we add these two numbers up it gets us to 535. Washington, D. C. is given 3 electoral votes as well. Add those 3 electoral votes to the 535 and we wind up with a total of 538 electoral votes. 269 votes is half, and 270 electoral votes is the majority and is what is needed to win the election.
There are 538 Electors in the Electoral College.
They can if their legislature votes to split their votes. Maine and Nebraska currently allow their vote to be split.
You need at least 270 electoral votes to win. The fewest number of states you could win is 11. They would have to be: Ca-55, Tx-34, Fl-27, Ga-15, Nc-15, NJ-15, Pa-21, Ny-31, Oh-20, Mi-17, Il-17 No other combination of 11 states could give you 270 electoral votes. Conversely you could win 39 states and DC and still lose. It should be noted that the residents of USA. territories cannot vote for The President. If they were given electoral votes the same way that states were this answer could change to 10 because you could make up the remainder with territorial votes. If however each territory was given three votes (as would be expected as that is the minimum number given to a state) then a candidate would need 277 votes and the answer would actually change to 12. If the electoral college were eliminated in favor of a popular vote system (which it should be) than you would not have to win any states as long as you won at least one territory.
