In ancient philosophy and alchemy, aether was considered the fifth element, also known as quintessence. It was believed to be a heavenly or celestial element that filled the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere. However, in modern science, aether is not recognized as a fundamental element of nature.

The fifth element is often considered to be either aether or quintessence. Aether is thought to be the material that fills the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere, while quintessence is believed to be a pure and rarefied essence or substance.
There is no fifth element. Yes there is. Its name is, Aether, the power underlying the other four elements, with no clear physical manifestation, just pure energy.
Aether was known as a "transmission medium". This is due to it's connection to alchemy. But this connection has been extended. Carl Jung connected alchemy to midlife depression. After air (intellect), water (intuition), fire (feeling) and earth (sensation), aether is the fifth element. The five elements are siblings (quintuplets). While the first four are conscious elements, aether is an unconscious element. In medieval alchemy, aether was invisible, and was considered a "transmission medium". To be productive in the second half of life, the four elements must act through the fifth. Part of the Ego's purpose in journeying into the unconscious, is to reunite the four elements it carries with the one left behind. In dreams, the Ego does not see the fifth element. It's presence is confirmed, by other aspects or characters in the dream. http://sites.google.com/site/jungalchemy/
Aristotle's fifth element is called "aether" (or "quintessence"). He believed it was a divine substance that made up the heavenly spheres and bodies, differing from the four terrestrial elements: earth, water, air, and fire. Aether was thought to be incorruptible and eternal, filling the universe beyond the terrestrial realm.
