Depending on the position of an element on the periodic table, one can know if it is a gas, liquid or metal. With that information, predicting the melting point is easy.

Reading the periodic table is like reading any normal form of English writing: you go from left to right, and from top to bottom. As the periodic table progresses, every element is more massive than the one that preceded it. Since each element has one more proton in its nucleus than the element which preceded it, and it also has additional neutrons (although the progression of neutrons is not as simple as that of the protons) the atoms get heavier.
