Pure iron is an element all unto itself. Pure iron is not a good metal; it is soft and weak. The most important element added to iron is carbon; iron alloyed with carbon becomes steel, which can be 1000 times stronger than pure iron. You can also add many other elements, like chromium, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt...to make "alloy steel."

Iron of course, plus most commonly oxygen. But iron pyrites are iron sulphide, so you'll find sulphur there as well.
