Have you resoldered the connections going to the two plugs? You may not be able to see the bad connection.Resolder them even if they look OK,that fixed it for me.

This is a common problem with this Mountaineer(all). It's due to bad soldering in the Radio. I found a guy on eBay that repaired it cheap. Now my over head display in my 2001 Explorer stopped showing the temp and compass heading because of bad soldering also. There's a answer for that fix on this site.. While we are talking about bad soldering there's a problem with the heater blend door motor on these cars that stops working because of bad soldering also. Easy fix once you pull it out..Just bad circuit boards...
