The Byzantine Empire lost Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and part of northern Iraq to the Arabs. It lost its lands in the Balkan Peninsula to the Slavs. It lost Turkey to the Seljuk Turks. It was because Greek was the lingua franca of the eastern Mediterranean and because this empire was centred on Greece. Constantinople, its capital, was in Greece. Moreover, the lands to the north of Greece, in the Balkan Peninsula, where Latin was the main language, were lost to Slavic invasions.

The Byzantine Empire did not spread. This is a term which had been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman empire after the fall of the western part of this empire. At the beginning this so-called Byzantine Empire had already reached it greater extent. In included Egypt, in north Africa, modern Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, western Jordan, Syria and Turkey in Asia and much of the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe. It then gradually lost its territories to the Arabs, the Slavs and the Turks.
Byzantine Empire is a term coined by modern historians to refer to the Eastern Roman Empire after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The term is derived from Byzantium, the name of the Greek city which was later turned into Constantinople. It is used to indicate the fact that within just over a century this empire became Greek in character. This empire lost most of its non-Greek territories (in Asia and Egypt to the Arabs and in the Balkan Peninsula to the Slavs) and became centred on Greece. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620.
