God's Holy Spirit ('active force' or figurative 'fingers' he uses to carry out his will(Psalms 8:3)), plus Jesus' leadership, empowered Jesus' followers to complete the work they'd been given to do (Matthew 28:19+20)(Matthew 24:14) At Acts 1:8, just before Jesus' resurrection back to heaven, he told them: ". . . you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."NASB (John 14:26)

2nd answer:

First you must understand that the apostles were election. They where were chosen for their actions in the first earth age, where they were part of the 2/3 that stood against Satan where they earned that right Revelation 12:3-4 and 2nd Peter chapter 3). Our father has reserved unto him those election who do not have freewill because they already earned their place in the 1st earth age. You can read about this in Romans chapter 11, and the entire book of Hebrews. Our Father can intercede in the lives of the elect but he will not interceded in the lives of those who have free will to choose.

The apostles were empowered because they are that remnant of elect that he can depend upon, and there is that remnant that exists today, however there are many who profess to be priests, preachers, teachers, pastors, but few are actually election, blessed with the Holy spirit of God (see Mark 13:5-6). The trick is understanding who is the right one. Usually the elect will teach our fathers word line on line and precept upon precept (not in snippets and bits and pieces) to those who are willing to listen, and usually not for money. They are oftentimes not part of a church system but independent Christians. You will find they teach with Zeal and don't sugar coat the truth or our fathers word. Everyone else has the freewill to choose to listen or ignore, the elect our father has sent. The elect are held responsible for what they teach and how they guide those of freewill. Those of freewill are held responsible for their decision to follow or ignore.

The apostles (election) were told by Christ to stay in Jerusalem until they received power from on high (Luke 24:44 - 53). That power was bestowed upon them and that is documented in Acts chapter 2. The apostles were given the power of the holy spirit (our Fathers spirit). It allowed them (among many other things) to communicate with people of all tongues at one time (when they would speak every one heard it in their own language without and interpreter).

Our father is not stupid, he won't hand the power of his holy spirit over to just anyone, you must be earn the right to posses that power (the apostles did), and you must use it for our Fathers will only. We often hear of people who search for artifacts from the tribe of Israel which they assume have special powers, however the powers are not held in the artifacts they are held by our Father and his spirit. Remember Christ told the apostles "until ye be endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49)" Further, in acts chapter 2 we read " and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the house where they were sitting,....and they were filled with the holy spirit.

Therefore your answer is two fold

1) The apostles were elect from the 1st earth age who did not bend a knee to Baal, they had proven they could be trusted by our Father.

2) The apostles were empowered with the holy spirit of our Father, the same spirit that possessed Christ.

The holy spirit gave the apostles the knowledge and strength they needed to continue teaching our Fathers word (truth) in all languages and healing. The account is fully defined in Acts chapter 2.

The apostles were selected because of they stood against Satan in the 1st earth age (2peter chapter 3, and Romans 8:29,30,31) therefore they already possessed the courage they needed, seeing Christ again in this earth age only served to embolden them.

There is an account in (Matthew 8 Mark 5 Luke 8), where evil spirits had entered a man who's name is given in luke's account of the situation (Legion). Legion knew Christ upon seeing him, as did the evil spirits that had entered into Legion, even calling him by name and identifying him as the son of God. They were very afraid of the power of Christ and his ability to send them to the bottomless pit (abyss), and begged him not to send them there. Christ allowed them to leave the man and go into the Swine nearby. its the fact that most Church systems do not teach the truth about the first earth age, that makes understanding our fathers word nearly impossible for some. Yet in this one account, we can see that even the evil spirits knew Christ from before when they encountered him for the first time in this earth age.

This is not spooky, crazy, or weird stories. Its simply that every soul existed in the 1st earth age, however Satan deceived 1/3 of those souls into believing that he was as God (Revelation 12 first 2-3 verses). In order to be fair, our Father ended the 1st earth age and gave all souls the freedom to choose in this earth age as flesh men. Satan will do the same exact thing in this earth age when he appears as the fake Jesus (anti-christ) as it is written in 2nd Thessalonians chapter 2, he will stand in the temple of God, in Jerusalem, claiming to be God.

Its not commonly taught that this earth age is your soul's second chance, but it is the truth as it is written in our fathers word. Remember its is written in Genesis just after our Father formed flesh man for this earth age; 1:28 And God blessed them and said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth... Replenish?

This is what the apostles knew that gave them courage. They knew the truth, concerning the 1st earth age and this earth age as it is written in our Fathers word. Therefore they were no longer afraid of others who did not posses the truth. They also had the holy spirit to guid them and teach them, you can't get better than that.

How could Paul have become an Apostle when he did not meet the criteria of having been with Jesus from the beginning of his ministry until his death and resurrection like Matthias was?

Jesus had twelve disciples/ apostles who were the original men who traveled and was taught by Jesus. These men had a large part in Jesus' ministry and were to carry on his teachings, which they did. Matthias was also a disciple of Jesus during this time and was counted as one of the original apostles when he was confirmed in the Book of Acts. Later we see a few other men in the New Testament who are called apostles, Paul being one of them. They indeed were apostles but were not of the group who were with Jesus in His ministry on earth. Barnabas and James, the Lord's brother were both called apostles.

At the wedding in Cana Jesus revealed himself to his friends as the Son of God and began his mission. During the next two or three years, Jesus and his followers spread the Good News and taught about Love.
