You need a light source for you to see a object. Without a light source, you wont be able to see anything at all.
For example, it is a sunny day and you are sitting underneath a tree in a park reading a book. For you to be able to see your book, there has to be a light source. The only source of light that has the biggest possibility is the sun. The light from the sun travels in a straight line to the book you are reading which then reflects in a straight line into your eyes.
The same concept is applied even if you are indoors but instead the light source can be the light bulb or maybe even the light from the sun coming in through the windows. It depends, but a light source is needed for you to be able to see anything.
