Cyrus brought about the fall of Babylon and ended the New Babylonian Empire in 539 bc.
Within a year of the entry of Cyrus into Babylon an edict was issued - 2Ch 36:22, 2Ch 36:23; Ezra 1:1 - granting permission for the exiles to return and build a house for the Lord in Jerusalem.
Cyrus also brought out the vessels of the Temple which Nebuchadrezzar had carried away and handed them over to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah who took them with him to Jerusalem.
Particulars of the return of the captives are given in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah.
The event that ended the captivity of the Jews, specifically the Babylonian Exile, was the decree of Cyrus the Great, the Persian king, in 539 BCE. After conquering Babylon, Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their temple. This decree marked the beginning of the return of many exiled Jews to their homeland, fulfilling prophecies from the Hebrew Scriptures. The rebuilding of the Second Temple was a significant outcome of this event.
