The purpose was for musical entertainment. The people who invented it, probably herdsman, were able to do so because they had goat or sheep skin available and reed pipes. It was popular in the Medieval Ages. During the Renaissance, people in the courts started to play it instead of just rural folk. It was meant to entertain the king and other royal people.
