It depends on the nature of the work.

Some chemical engineers have to be near the plant at the production facility if he is a field engineer.

Some chemical engineers sit in hi-tech control rooms monitoring and controlling processes if he is a process control engineer.

Some chemical engineers would be in harsh environments wearing protective equipment if it is a toxic chemical facility/nuclear power plant/ thermal power plant; also chemistry has risks of explosions and fires.

Some chemical engineers would be in offices and departments, far away from the plant researching and collect data analyzing processes and providing useful feedback based on statistical methods.
