I am doing my windows with oil primer then latex enamel top coat. I bought a $25 HVLP gravity feed touch up gun from menards, it works very well with both. you have to thin most paints I did 5 little plastic spoons of water per quart for the latex and 6 or 7 spoonfulls of paint thinner(mineral spirits) for the oil primer. Very good results! Although I would rather use water base primer for clean up reasons(I can't use water base primer because of stain bleed through). I am using Sherman Williams Pro block oil primer & dutchboy latex enamel semi-gloss trim paint.
Hope this helps

Regardless of the color, oil-based paints use solvent, normally mineral spirits, as a solvent Vs. water for water-based and oil-based paints dry harder than latex paints making them more scrubable. Water-based paints don't yellow or crack as they age and can be formulated to dry fairly hard while still retaining some elasticity. Both oil and water-based white paints should cover to opacity in a single coat.
Oil-based paints use oil as a binder, while latex paints use water. Oil-based paints are more durable and provide a smoother finish, but they take longer to dry and have a strong odor. Latex paints dry faster, are easier to clean up, and have less odor.
