Due to advances in recording technology, now it is easier to hear individual parts like the 2nd alto or 3rd trumpet part.

Jazz isn't simply a blend of blues and ragtime. There were several other influences that played their part e.g. the rhythmic influence aspect of African drumming, military band music and the French classical music that was favoured by the Creole population in New Orleans at the time that the first jazz began to be played. But, this is all supposition and subsequent analysis. As no-one wrote about the origins of jazz until some years after the event. no-one really knows.
