Originally, at a tennis court at Versailles. The National Assembly consisted of the members of the third estate, who were one day locked out of a Estate General meeting by the first and second estate members. They were angry, and went to a nearby tennis court at the palace where they swore an oath that they would not disband until a constitution was formed.
They also took up a new name for themselves: The National Assembly.
