They became hebrews when Abram crossed over the Jordan. Before the covenant between God and Abram basically all were Gentiles. So When Abram entered into the covenant of God, And the Hebrew nation was born, then the gentiles could be grafted into the family of Abram through his seed which came Jesus.
As shown in recent years through DNA analyses, Jews are a Middle-Eastern people originating in the Fertile Crescent which includes Israel and northern Mesopotamia. In 2000, the analysis of a report by Nicholas Wade "provided genetic witness that Jewish communities have, to a remarkable extent, retained their biological identity separate from their host populations, evidence of relatively little intermarriage or conversion into Judaism over the centuries. The results accord with Jewish history and tradition."
In classical Jewish sources such as the Torah, Jews are spoken of as a nation (with shared ancestry), with Judaism being the national code of living.
Today we often use the term ethno-religious group to describe the Jewish people. Jews have certain elements that are common to all ethnicities, such as a common language, particular customs of association, a shared history, and a common ancestry. Jews are descended from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives. Despite their diversity, Jews are related to each other (as has been demonstrated by DNA analyses of far-flung Jewish communities).
At the same time, Judaism is a religion, because it's defined in dictionaries as the religion of Moses; the religion of the Torah, which includes people born Jewish as well as non-ethnic Jews who became converts.
Judaism is consided an ethnicity as well as a religion, although people of other ethnicities do sometimes convert to Judaism.
