Spradling is an Anglicized Old Norse name that means man who walks with a physical impairment. The name "sprackelegger" is the Old Norse root that was Anglicized to sprackling, i.e. spradling around 1100AD. The first recorded use of the name was to Thorkil Sprackelegger, son of Swedish King Styrbjorn Olafson and Tyre Haraldsdatter. Thorkil was sent to what is now York England to rule the Viking outpost at nearly the end of the Viking era, around 1040. All male Spradlings can trace their Y chromosome to Thorkil and his male ancestry.
