An eclipse
That would be a lunar eclipse.
A lunar eclipse.
The event caused by the Moon passing through Earth's shadow is called a lunar eclipse. During this phenomenon, the Earth is positioned directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight from reaching the Moon and casting a shadow on it. This can result in the Moon taking on a reddish hue, often referred to as a "blood moon." Lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon.

The moon darkens because it passes through Earths shadow.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes through the Earth's shadow.
An opaque body forms a shadow because it blocks light from passing through it. When light hits an opaque object, the object absorbs or reflects the light, preventing it from passing through to the surface behind it. This creates a shadow on the opposite side of the object where light cannot reach.
refraction
More specifically, a total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the umbra, the darker part of the shadow.
