When The Pandavs decided to gamble with the Kauravs, they gamble and lose everything. they also gambled their wife Draupadi. She was then dragged from her house to The Kauravs palace and there they tried de-clothe her. she prayed to Krishna and he saved her by making sure the material of her clothes never ran out. she then vowed that until Dusashan's blood was on her hair; she'd never braid it again. This was because it was disrespectful if you didn't have your tied when you were in front elders.

Did draupadi start mahabharat which led deaths and destruction?

The Duryodhana (The eldest of Kaurava) tried to out rage the modesty of Draupadi. He opened his thigh and asked the Draupadi to sit on the same. Then he ordered his brother Dushhasana to make her naked in front of many people. Nobody including the grand father Bhhismacharya helped her. She prayed Lord Krishna to save her. He was invisible as per the story and supplied her with so many cloths, that she could not be made naked. Draupadi wanted to take revenge for this insult. She wanted total destruction and nothing less. Later on Lord Krishna was sent to Kaurava on be half of Pandavas for compromise. That time Draupadi told him that she wanted to take revenge. But Lord Krishna was bound by morals and religion to avoid the war. I have studied "The Mahabharata" during my childhood. I have been feeling and still feel that it was the Lord Krishana, who also wanted war. He was probably more hurt than Draupadi herself. But then He had to fix the same into moral and religion, also. He wanted half of the territory for Pandawas. Duryodhana denied the same. Lord Krishna bargained again and again. At last He was ready to settle for only five villages for five Pandawas. Duryodhana said that the Pandawas were not the sons of Pandu. He said that the Pandawas were illegitimate. He said that he was not ready to give a land which can be accommodated on the tip of the needle. That was the 'extreme' decision. Total destruction is allowed as per the religion in such extreme situation only. Rather Lord Krishna told this thing very clearly in Gita. He told in Gita that let every thing perish, but let the justice, truth and religion prevail. Every thing is going to perish, other wise also. Every body from either side, including the sons of Pandawas were killed in the ghastly war, that fallowed, except Lord Krishna himself, the Pandawas and few others. There is another story behind, why Duryodhana wanted to out rage the modesty of the Draupadi. But then you have to write the whole "Mahabharata".
