The event that began the public life of Jesus was his baptism and the announcement by God that Jesus is his beloved son. The baptism is preceded by the announcement by John that Jesus was coming and followed (except in John's Gospel) by the forty days in the wilderness. These events and the progress of the public life of Jesus can be seen in the parallel structure* of Mark's Gospel, where they were first reported:

Just as the gospel opens with the explanation of the coming of Jesus (event A), it closes (event A') with the explanation by the young man of the departure of Jesus (Mark's Gospel originally ended at verse 16:8, with this announcement and the women fleeing in terror, telling no one. The 'Long Ending' of verses 16:9-20 was added much later).

The baptism, the voice of God and the forty days in the wilderness are mirrored in the Transfiguration (events B', C' and D').
