Lent- the forty days between ash Wednesday and Easter.
Lent is traditionally the forty days before Easter. Ash Wednesday to holy Saturday, Sundays (6) do not count in the count of forty days as they are celebrated for Jesus refusing the Devil's temptations. Answer: that last answer makes little sense to me. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday which is 40 days before Easter. Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon of the vernal equinox. This year,2009, the first full moon of the vernal equinox occurred on Thursday, April 9th and therefore Easter was celebrated on Sunday, April 12th. Ash Wednesday was February 25th.
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, three days after his crucifixion.
Easter starts on Easter and ends fifty days later. It ends on Pentecost on June 12. Most Christians celebrate Easter for all fifty days between Easter and Pentecost after fasting and praying for the forty days of lent.
For the Catholic Church and many other 'daughter' churches, the holy day 40 days after their Easter Sunday is called Ascension Thursday.
Fifty days after Jesus' resurrection, the significant event of Pentecost occurred, where the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, empowering them to spread the message of Christianity.
Lent is the forty days from Ash Wednesday to Easter. The Sundays are NOT part of the forty days. Therefore, there is no fasting on Palm Sunday or any Sunday during Lent.
By working backward from Easter Sunday - the forty days previous to that are "Lent". Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox.
