An event that changed her life was being captured by the English and held for ransom during Anglo-Indian hostilities in 1613. While being held, she converted to Christianity and changed her name to Rebecca. Even though the opportunity to return to her people came, she chose to remain with the English. In 1614 she married Jon Rolfe, a tobacco farmer, and they had a son in January 1615. She became ill and died in 1617. Had she not been captured, held for ransom, and decided to stay with the English, her life would have been totally different and she may not have died so young.
