To get to the east African empires, the traders would have to sail all the way around the continent of Africa or sail to Africa and then have to cross the dangerous rain forests and deserts of Africa. It might help if you looked at a map and drew a line from Europe and the Americas to east and west Africa. Going to west Africa from these locations with the technology of the time was much easier. (Assuming that this was around the time of European imperialism in Africa, or at least before modern times)
