He shows Fortunato a trowel. This is ironic because he later uses it do bury Fortunato alive. It also show Montresor's ignorance because Freemasonry (aka Masonic order) and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (aka masons) are two completely different groups of people.

In Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Cask of Amontillado," the evidence that Montresor killed Fortunato is primarily based on Montresor's detailed narration of the events leading up to the murder. Montresor admits to luring Fortunato into the catacombs, getting him drunk, chaining him to the wall, and then burying him alive behind a wall of bricks. The story is told from Montresor's perspective, leaving readers to rely on his account as the only evidence of Fortunato's death.

It is an actual account by Montresor himself 50 years later... Why would there be any reasons to lie? There would not be a story if he was lying...

There was no investigation of his disappearance so to the public and his family there was no evidence which is why Montresor got away with the murder, and could confess it 50 years later.
