Shark Oil in a bottle has been a part of Bermuda's hurricane lore for many years. The oil is drawn from the liver of a Puppy shark by hanging the liver in the sun. The sharks are generally caught between June and September at the full or a waning moon. The resultant fluid is then placed in a bottle, sealed and strung up outside.
Locals check the oil to determine if a blow is coming or not. The oil stays clear in normal conditions, gets cloudy when stormy weather is on its way and turns milky white if a hurricane is approaching.
There is no scientific explanation for this phenomenon but many old Bermudian's swear by it!
