People from all over migrated East and settled in Shinar. They all spoke the same language and, as such, were a powerful group. They built a city and a great tower for notoriety. God saw this and realized a group this powerful would be hard to control. He scattered them over the Earth and messed up their speech so they couldn't understand each other anymore. This is why there are different languages across the world.

To stop the building of the "tower" and the city, our Father gave mankind different languages (tongues) which confounded their communication (babel). The word Babel is Strong's Hebrew word 894 which is from the root word 1101 (look up both words). The biblical reference to Babylon is based upon this same word. The Babylon of the end times will provide confusion, misunderstanding upon the people who do not have the seal of God in their forehead (mind). The seal is to know our Fathers word, so the events of the end of this 2nd iteration of earth (see 2nd Peter ch 3), don't effect you.

Answer:

The Bible says that: "... the whole earth was of one language, and of one
speech..." (Gen.11:1) after the flood.

Communication among men was good. Men could freely express their ideas,
designs, plans and notions with one another... and invent ways to implement them.

"...and the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one
language: and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from
them, which they have imagined to do.

"...let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not
understand one another's speech." (Gen.11:6-7)

Why might God have done that?

The indication of scripture is that God has put man on a 6000 year (6-day week - II Peter 3:8) time schedule.

One reason is to let man learn that he is incapable of governing himself apart from the laws of God. Man is even now learning that lesson, whether he's aware of it now or not.

The thousand years that follow this "6000 year week" of man's rule will be "the Day of the Lord"... or the "Sabbath" day... a day of rest from man's labors. It will be a thousand year "day" of Bible study and practical application in obedience to God's Word for the nations of the world.

But perhaps, the world of one common language allowed the minds of men to communicate TOO well. Perhaps if God had let it continue that way... maybe man's technological advances would have developed quicker than it did, because all the brilliant minds of the world would not have been obstructed by the "language barrier."

Perhaps God was BUYING HIMSELF SOME TIME for the development of His 6000 year plan.

Recent history shows how, with the language barrier less of a problem today than in centuries past, the communication between peoples, nations and cultures is "bringing the world back to the time when the whole earth was of one speech".

Today... "nothing is being restrained from us, that we imagine to do..."!!!

Prophecy speaks of a time in the last days (of man's age) when the very real threat of utter annihilation of all life on earth will become reality (Matt.24:22).

Perhaps, if God hadn't confounded the languages thousands of years ago... the threat of all life ending on earth would have happened thousands of years earlier.

Perhaps God's confounding of the languages worked to perfection. Perhaps man's 6000 year week is about over, and unrestrained man is about to imagine himself into extinction, if God doesn't save us from ourselves as His prophecies tell us He will.

Perhaps the confounding of the languages at Babel put God's plan right on schedule.

Perhaps people use of the story of the Tower of Babel to explain the confounding of the languages, because, as the Bible says: "THY WORD IS TRUTH" (John 17:17).

According to the Bible, the people were intending to build a tower to the heavens to reach God. God prevented this by causing the builders to speak different languages. As a result, it came to be the origin story for those who follow the Bible of why different people speak different languages. Of course, modern linguistics demonstrates a gradual development and change in language that disproves the Babel account in any serious scholarly context, but this is relatively recent in terms of how long the Bible has been around.

Why scientists consider any hypothesis valuable?

Any idea about how an unknown phenomenon occurs, or a simpler explanation for a known one, is useful in figuring out what exactly makes it happen. If it works, it can be tested and refined to provide a better explanation; if not, it OS one further things we know doesn't work.
