The fish is the fillet of a white fish, such as cod, haddock, hake etc., but NOT oily fish such as salmon, sardines or anchovies.
The fillet is washed in batter. Batter is a mixture of flour, water, milk, possibly beer, possibly a little vinegar, or, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
It is then places in hot cooking oil or liquid (hot) lard, or dripping (beef fat).
It is allowed to fry for about 10 minutes, until the cooked battered fish floats on the oil surface.
The chips(UK) are known as potato fries, or french fries(USA).
