UN stands for UNITED NATIONS
The United Nations (or UN) is an international organization created in 1945, following WW II, for the purpose of preventing war. It should be noted that although there have been lots of wars since 1945 and there are several wars taking place even as I type, the UN has still done some very good things for the world. One UN agency, the World Health Organization (WHO) succeeded in wiping out smallpox, which was at one time the most dangerous disease in the world. That in itself would justify the existence of the UN even if it had never accomplished anything else.
Though not exactly the same the League of Nations was a precursor to the UN.
