Muller v. Oregon, 208 US 412 (1908)
Future Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis argued for the state of Oregon in Muller v. Oregon, 208 US 412 (1908), convincing the Supreme Court that Oregon's 1903 statute limiting women's work hours to no more than 10 per day in certain types of business was constitutional. In support of his assertion, Brandeis submitted a 113-page brief that included sociological and medical data and expert testimony substantiating the potential for physical harm associated with overwork. This type of extra-legal persuasive information, known as a "Brandeis Brief," has become a common tool in class litigation.
