Scout gives Dill a drink of water during Tom Robinson's trial to help soothe his nerves. Dill becomes overwhelmed by the tense environment of the courtroom and Scout's act of kindness calms him down.
Dill lives in Mississippi with his aunt during the summer. In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Scout describes Dill as coming from "Meridian, Mississippi, and was spending the summer with his aunt" (Chapter 1).
Scout was six years old when she first met Dill in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Dill visits his aunt, Miss Rachel, who lives next door to the Finches, during the summer. Scout and her brother, Jem, befriend Dill and the three children spend their summers together exploring their neighborhood and creating imaginative adventures.
Scout and Dill discover that Dolphus Raymond is actually drinking Coca-Cola from the bottle he carries in a paper bag, not alcohol as they initially thought. He pretends to be drunk to give the town something to gossip about and to avoid judgment for his lifestyle choices.
Dill's parents give him all of the toys that he wants, in hopes that he will leave them alone. Dill is very lonely and neglected and gets passed from famly member to family member. He also has a huge imagination.
It represents that Jem is older and more mature now.
Atticus suggests that Dill should be allowed to stay with them for the summer to keep him safe and out of trouble. He believes that having Dill around will give him a structured environment and positive influences. Additionally, Atticus feels that being with Scout and Jem will offer Dill stability and a sense of family.
I think both Boo and Dill have unstable backgrounds in the sense that the book doesn't explain much about them and their families. Both Boo and Dill (I'm just brainstorming here) want someone to love. I think this because Boo riskes alot to connect with Jem and Scout. Dill runs away because his new family doesn't show interest in him. They give him everything you can but but what he wants is love. Scout and Dill learn that Mr. Raymond isn't an alcoholic. He has a black wife and some half-white half-black children. He acts drunk so that he can give people an excuse on why he lives the life he does. Not because he enjoys his life but because he's always drunk and doesn't know any better. He doesn't like the racial discrimination in Maycomb either.
The scout will be here tomorrow. Give out a shout when you scout him out.
Among Black citizens, Atticus has become a hero. They give up their seats as a sign of respect for the children's father. It is the Reverend who has to nudge the children to stand when Atticus leaves the courtroom. They had not yet learned their father was so deeply respected in town.
