The first explorer to sail to the Caribbean islands was Christopher Columbus. He made his historic voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, landing in the Bahamas and subsequently exploring several other islands in the Caribbean, including Cuba and Hispaniola. His expeditions marked the beginning of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
Columbus first visited the Bahamas, landing in a place he named San Salvador. He later sailed to Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles, two other islands in the Caribbean.
In 1774 Captain James Cook sailed through the islands and named it "FeeJee." Despite the fact that Dutch Explorer, Abel Tasman spotted the group of islands first.
Christopher Columbus was the first explorer to sail to the Caribbean islands between North and South America. He embarked on his voyages under the sponsorship of Spain, making his first landing in the Bahamas in 1492. Columbus's expeditions marked the beginning of European exploration and colonization in the Americas.
