The half that we can see
The new moon phase occurs when the moon lies between the sun and Earth, with the side facing Earth in shadow. This position causes the moon to be not visible from Earth as the illuminated side faces away.
-- The visible side.-- The outside. It's usually called the "near side" of the Moon. The side we can't see is calledthe "far side".
The back side of the Moon always faces away from Earth and is not visible. The Apollo 8 astronauts were the first people to view the back side of the moon directly, when they orbited the moon. The first pictures of the back side of the moon were taken by the Soviet Union's Luna 3 space probe in 1959.
During a waxing crescent phase of the moon, the sun is illuminating only a portion of the side that faces Earth, creating the visible crescent shape. The unlit portion that faces Earth is not visible because there is no sunlight reflecting off of it to be seen from our perspective.
The moon has one face that is constantly facing the Earth, a phenomenon known as synchronous rotation. This means that only one side of the moon is visible to us from Earth.

The same side of the moon always faces the Earth, with the exception of small changes caused by libration. Only 50 % of the moon is visible at one time from Earth, but this effect allows us to see a total of about 59% of the surface over time. See the link.

When the moon lies between the sun and the Earth, it is in a position known as a new moon. During this phase, the side of the moon that is illuminated by the sun faces away from the Earth, leaving the side facing us in darkness. As a result, the moon is not visible from our perspective. This alignment occurs roughly every 29.5 days as part of the moon's lunar cycle.
We only see one part of the surface, at any time the moons faces occur.
