Marathon in 490 BCE averted a punitive expedition specifically targeted on Athens, not Greece generally, to punish it for interfering in the Persian Empire in Ionia in Asia Minor. After being repelled at Marathon, Persia resolved to bring all the Greek cities under control, and sent a major expedition to do this in 480 BCE. The ten year delay was caused by a revolt in Egypt which the Persians had to deal with first before turning back to deal with Greece.
