soon after independence most African elites undermined the interests of the minority groups making them to feel sidelined against hence a need to reassert their position through wars as in the case of the Hutus and Tutsi minority in Rwanda.

In Zimbabwe ,the Gukurahundi attrocities was a result of the need of the Mugabe regime to silence minority Ndebele people in their bid for eqaul power sharing.Former ZAPU cadres were against Mugabe's assuming of power in favour of Nkomo despite his defeat in the presidencial elections hence they began acts of 'banditry' refusing to put down their guns and to recognise the existing government in a bid to force Mugabe from office.

Wealth amassing by African elites at the expense of poor Africans also led to civil wars as in the case of the Banyamulenge in the DRC.Dictatorial tendences of the African elite also led to wars with others wanting power transfer.African elites hold onto power for too long and in the process ruin their national economy.
