Nobody "found" New York; when the first Europeans got there, it was forests and grasslands. The explorer Henry Hudson, sailing in service of the Dutch Republic, was probably the first European to see the area of what is now Manhattan, Long Island, and the Hudson River.
The first European settlement in the area was called Fort Amsterdam, and the first town was Neu Amsterdam. When the English took over the area 50 years later, the name of the city was changed to New York.
