Columbus must have known how to read a little bit because he managed to use a map and find America. He also made a map of how he got there when going back.

Columbus. Actually, there is some thought now that he was Spanish and had taken a Italian persona to gain money from the Spanish King and Queen because his family had political differences with them. One of the things that promotes this thinking is that all of his writings and letters are in a high level Spanish. The fact he knew how to read and write shows he was from a noble family and his wife was also from a noble family. Nobles didn't marry outside their class which is another point he just wasn't a simple Italian sailor.
